De Zandkamer + IJburg Community
How to perforate emptiness?
De Zandkamer is an interactive installation on Strand IJburg, celebrating the element of sand by creating a temporary sandroom on the beach. It is part of the series ‘Water, Wind and Sand,’ inviting people to connect with the elements of IJburg beach
A room built completely out of the construction waste from nearby construction sites invited IJburg residents to draw on its wall to feel a sense of ownership on the otherwise empty, stretched out beach. The room functioned as an ‘anchor’ for getting together and creative expression, celebrated with a VoKu (community dinner) and a fireshow in the evening. The question ‘Where Is Home?’ refers to the uncertainty of when you call a new place ‘home,’ both in the context of the newness of the urban development of Centrumeiland, and how people from different backgrounds shape their sense of home in a new environment, navigating the space between cultures.
The installation was funded by the municipality of Amsterdam, on our initiative to invite culture in this new part of the city.
