De Meent // Platform for Debate
How to debate in a field?
In a time when the gap between consumption and production in the food chain is at stake (farmers protests 2022), the question arises to reconnect consumers to the farmers and farmlands they rely on. The project is a series of design and construction sessions organised for Boerderij De Meent, with the goal to build a pavilion with farm volunteers and local residents. This small amphitheatre, in which participants sit around wild vegetation, is built entirely from the old farm's demolition wood. It provides a space for Boerderij De Meent to facilitate conversations between farmers and citizens in a pavilion built by their hands - and of their DNA. This project shows a methodology that harnesses local material sources and collective making processes to create objects of value to the local community.
The old rafters and ridge beam of the barn are stacked like an inverted pyramid, held in place by metal rods in the joint. The decks are made with the ceiling planks. The structure sits tilted on the concrete foundation of the former pig shed. The traces of paint on the beams tell a story of the past. To cover the space for programming in the rain, a tarp is tied down between the structure and the concrete foundation. Thank you to all the volunteers helping out during construction!
